A note from Greg: Almondmilk Separation

UPDATE: Dear Califians, I am pleased to announce that the small number of Almondmilk bottles that experienced natural separation, which impacted the texture of the Almondmilk, should all be gone from retailer shelves.  Our commitment is to provide you with the highest quality products, and we welcome your feedback. Do not hesitate to reach out to us at any time.

Hi Califians,

I want to let you know that a limited number of our Almondmilk products have experienced what is called natural separation which has resulted, in some cases, in a coagulated look to the product. While these Almondmilks are still safe to drink, and the separation issue may be remedied if the bottle is shaken vigorously, we do not feel this texture is what consumers have come to expect of our products. To protect the quality experience of our consumers, we have issued a withdrawal of the Almondmilks from the batches showing natural separation – again, I want to assure you that this is NOT a recall and not a food safety concern.

We have identified the cause and have already taken the necessary steps to correct the issue. The underlying cause is related to something that can happen along the supply chain if the products were exposed to unusually cold or freezing temperatures. Retailers are aware of the separation and are helping to ensure that the Califia Farms Almondmilks on their shelves meet our highest standards by withdrawing bottles showing separation. We take our promise of excellence in taste, texture and overall quality seriously — that's why we would like to immediately provide replacement coupons to those consumers who have experienced this natural separation in their Almondmilks.

I want you to know that we always put you first – your safety, your enjoyment, your trust – and we will never compromise on quality. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Greg Steltenpohl

Q: I accidently drank it…is it safe?

Yes. The Almondmilk you purchased is going through what we've identified as premature natural separation, which means that while it is still completely safe to drink, the texture does not look like what you would expect from our Almondmilks. In fact, if you shake the bottle vigorously, the separation issue may be remedied. However, this texture does not meet our high standards of excellence – that’s why we are providing replacement coupons to those consumers who have experienced this natural separation in their Almondmilks.

Q: Why has this happened?

What has happened with your Almondmilk is something called premature natural separation meaning that some of the solids separated from some of the liquids. The product remains completely safe to drink and vigorously shaking the bottle can recombine the ingredients. The cause of the separation is related to circumstances along the supply chain in which the product may have been exposed to unusually cold or freezing temperatures. We have already taken the necessary steps to correct the issue.

Q: Are you recalling these products?

No, we are not recalling these products; however, we have offered to withdraw them from retailers’ shelves if they identify separation occurring. Our retailers are aware of the issue and will be helping to ensure that the Califia Farms Almondmilks on their shelves meet our highest standards. This issue only impacted some of the Almondmilks that were shipped in November and we have already taken corrective actions to ensure that this will not happen again. Consumers who purchased Almondmilk that experienced this natural separation will receive a replacement coupon.

Q: How do I know if my Califia Almondmilk is impacted?

The most important thing to know is that the affected Almondmilks are completely safe to drink. If your Almondmilk has experienced natural separation, you will find that the texture has changed, that the Almondmilk is congealed and/or the liquids and solids have experienced separation. If you think your Almondmilk has experienced natural separation, let us know and we will send you a replacement coupon. The following lot codes have experienced separation:
